Philanthropy: the Albert and Miriam Sklar Foundation
A strong tradition of philanthropy has been passed from one generation to the next in the Sklar family. The practice of giving is rooted in the examples set by Albert and Miriam Sklar through the Albert and Miriam Sklar Foundation. It is carried on today by Howard Sklar and the Sklar Family Foundation.
The Sklar Family Foundation is a generous supporter of many charitable organizations that contribute to a wide variety of causes. Whether is it supporting the construction of homes for Habitat for Humanity or providing disaster relief through supporting the American Red Cross after floods ravaged Boulder in 2013, Sklar is passionate about helping those in need. The Shreveport Regional Arts Council, El Karubah Shriner’s, Shreveport Garden Study Club, Deaf Action Center, Humane Society of Boulder Valley and the Boy Scouts of America Norwela Council are all organizations that have benefited from the support of the Sklar Family Foundation.
Education is a passion of Howard Sklar’s, and his charitable giving has benefited numerous educational institutions. One benefactor of that charitable giving has been Centenary College of Louisiana where past gifts include the Albert Sklar Chair of Chemistry, donated in memory of Albert Sklar, and the Miriam Mandel Sklar First Generation Scholarship, donated in memory of Miriam Sklar. The Sklar Family Foundation’s most recent gift of the Sklar Family Foundation Annual Centenary Award covers the net tuition of a student for 4 years at the college (2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019). Another benefactor is the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Sklar Family Foundation contributed to the Sustainable Excellence Initiative which was established to provide support for the construction and renovation of such athletic facilities at the University as the Champions Center, Indoor Practice Facility and Dal Ward Athletic Center. Sklar’s contribution specifically targeted the Sklar Family Indoor Track and married two of Howard Sklar’s passions for athletics and education. The Sklar Family Foundation is also a supporter of Mr. Sklar’s almae matres: Phillips Academy Andover, the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. And, the Sklar Family Foundation funded the Miriam M. Sklar Endowed Professorship in Theoretical Math & Physics at LSU-Shreveport.
Howard Sklar’s desire to carry on and grow the philanthropic endeavors started by his parents is perhaps most evident in his support of B’Nai Zion Congregation, where his long-term pledge has and will continue to support that organization and its leadership for two decades.
